Understanding the market
An ageing population and an increase in people suffering from long term conditions, such as dementia, coronary heart disease (CHD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes and stroke are placing a growing demand on health and social services. In the UK over the next 50 years the number of people aged over 65 will rise from 9.3 million to 16.8 million. The scale of this burden is well documented.
Currently there are just over 15 million people living with chronic conditions in the UK. According to recent estimates published by the Department of Health, by 2030 the incidence of chronic disease in the over 65s will more than double. This is caused by the peak in births in the 1960s, changing lifestyles and increasing life expectancy. By 2025 it is estimated that 40% of the population will have a chronic condition and it is widely recognised that chronic conditions will put an unsustainable strain on the NHS, social care and housing.
