Innovation House at the Innovation Expo

David Nicholson, Lord Darzi, Lord Drayson, Andy Burnham, and Sir Liam Donaldson….we shook hands with them all at the Innovation Expo, 18-19 June.

Promoting assisted living products and technologies, and a few innovative products developed in the East and West Midlands, the MedilinkWM team again raised the profile of the creative work being done by our network of companies.

The Innovation House was stuffed with telehealth and telecare products – nearly 90 products represented by 42 different companies!  The MedilinkWM team demonstrated several technologies including Sero Solutions’ near field communication, Safe Patient Systems’ remote monitoring telecare system, and the Nexus DMS profiling bed.

This high-level exhibition also featured keynote presentations from most of the above-named dignitaries.  During Lord Drayson’s speech about the Office of Life Sciences Tony Davis asked about the government’s plans for assisting SMEs, to which the Minister of State for Science and Innovation replied “the first three priorities for SMEs are finance, finance and finance – finance for capital and early stage development; followed by the NHS tenders being too administratively-challenging for smaller companies to respond to.”  He went on to explain that the OLS will be presenting its plan for inter-agency governmental work will be released in July – and that companies need to invest in their own R&D and the growth of the sector.

And following-on from the Naidex exhibition there were four kiosks requesting attendee’s views on technology in healthcare – both for themselves and for any dependant individuals.  Gathering nearly 500 more responses the entire dataset from the two shows will be combined to create statistical information SHAs and PCTs can use for developing a business case for purchasing assisted living technologies.
