Sustainability is a key feature in the i-House, in addition to the computer automation of lighting and heating care has been taken to use super insulation and ventilation to retain and conserve heat. Appropriate heating is a critically important factor in maintaining good health, cold is a major cause of death in the over 65 age group. In the last five years, more than 130,000 people over 65 have died from cold related illnesses during the winter months in Britain (Source: Age Concern). Many of these deaths are directly attributed to poor heating in the home, primarily due to the individual fearing high winter fuel bills. For the same price as a high end gas boiler the heating in the i-House is supplied by a highly innovative Air to Heat Pump which draws heat from the air outside the house. This provides the equivalent heat output to a gas boiler at a fraction of the cost. The combination of the super insulation and the heat pump provide a house with minimal energy bills.
